Nas - Hip-Hop Is Dead (Review)

So with the leakage of Nas’s upcoming album, I guess you could say it was widely anticipated since it was his first on Def Jam under Jay-Z as prez, I’m going to review it for you. My ears are now your ears, now let’s see what we hear.
From the start of the album you get hit with Money Over Bullshit, it’s got a pretty decent enough beat, nothing spectacular but at the same time it’s one of the better ones on the album. Honestly after the sub-par intro track you’re kind of left with not so great tracks until you get to the really awkward Hip Hop Is Dead, the lyrics are decent but the beat… I hope he didn’t pay Will.I.Am too much money to re-use his own beat.
More of a side note track just for it’s ridiculous-ness and retardation, you have Who Killed It. Someone apparently let Nas get high while doing, because he apparently thought it was a good idea to spit lyrics like some 1920’s New York Gangster. Whoever let him do that should be shot, was probably Jay telling him it was a good idea.
By track 7 you finally get that much hyped Nas & Jay-Z collaboration, and wow, it’s boring. Jay-Z does yet another half-ass guest spot on a track for another rapper and makes the song less likable then it would’ve been had he not been there. Is it just me or was the last good guest appearances Jay has made have been on Beyonce’s album?
Anyways back on subject.
After a couple of tracks with decent but not too good beats you’ll come to Can’t Forget About You, this track has all sorts of crap going on it. Old time R&B beats and chorus with Nat King Cole’s Unforgettable making an appearance at the end. Makes you really hate Will.I.Am more then you already should after listening to this.
Just before the end track you get a Dr. Dre produced beat featuring Game and Marsha of Floetry. It’s a decent song I suppose, can’t really remember much of it due to the fact that by the time you get to it, you’re ready to turn off the CD. My suggestion is, turn it off before you get to Hope, Nas’ a capella that desperately needs a beat behind it.
Basically this isn’t the best Nas album but it’s definitely no God’s Son (nothing but a Bravehearts album could be worse then that). Give it a shot if you’re a diehard Nas fan like me, you might end up liking it eventually.
Check the new poll up (here) and vote on what you think of the album.
