John Legend - Evolver (Review)
After his debut album Get Lifted had the hit “Used to Love U” (that was by far one of the best songs in 2004) John Legend cemented himself in R&B mainstream as someone who can make great music. He found himself singing chorus’s for Jay-Z, Kanye West, and other rappers who needed a welcome change from Akon. 2 years later he released Once Again which had some great songs, but for me wasn’t the home run I had been expecting after his debut, though that was fine because it was still great music.
Now another 2 years after Once Again here comes Evolver on the back of the great single with André 3000 “Green Light” and based off that single alone its bound to be good, right?
For me, Evolver is everything I hoped Once Again would be.
It feels like a continuation of the good music that was put out on his debut. With good guest appearances from André 3000, Kanye West, Estelle, and Brandy this album has a good flow with few missteps. From the harmonizing intro track to end track it’s just a great album. Obviously “Green Light” is a highly rated song simply because André 3000 is on it, surprisingly or maybe not so surprisingly, the track “Quickly” featuring Brandy is another one that deserves more than one listen, at least according to my iTunes, along with the track with Kanye West featuring.
The album as a whole for me is something that I’ll go and tell a friend who’s into R&B and good music, that they should definitely go and check out. The only thing I can find wrong with this album is for some reason I can’t get myself to like “Everybody Knows“, might just be one of those songs that’ll come up on random that’ll take me by surprise. Overall I think if you have a chance to hop on iTunes or see this CD in a store, definitely grab it, don’t wait for your friend who knows a friend who has a friend to burn you a copy. It’s worth a buy.
